The Education Of Poverty

WE CAN DO GREAT THINGS WITH SO LITTLE

Haiti has more than 250,000 children out of school. 90% of Haiti’s schools are privately owned and require tuition fees along with the cost of transportation, books and mandatory uniforms. This makes it very hard for Haitians to send their children to schools. Due to this high cost, poor families only send their children to school only during months or years when they could afford it. As such, several children lose years of schooling and are, often, too old for their grade level when they return.

A GLANCE AT THOSE WHO LIVES IN POVERTY

Poverty leads to poor health in a community. The effects of poverty are multi-layered, and it creates a health spiral that is difficult to get out of. Many Haitians cannot afford to pay for a doctor’s visit, and in rural areas free clinics are often miles away. The transportation cost and amount of time necessary to get to the clinic is too much for many people in rural Haiti.

YOU ARE THE CHANGE

GIVING HOPE BACK

For generations deforestation has plague Haiti’s survival. Haiti has the highest rates of deforestation of any country in the world. Merely 2% of its forest remains. Massive amounts of deforestation contribute to significant drought and persistent socioeconomic problems. Byproducts of deforestation are erosion, extreme flooding, degradation of water resources, and habitat destruction. All of these have crippled agriculture and drastically reduced Haiti’s biodiversity.

The gender gaps

OVERCOMING THE BARRIERS

Women and girls in poor countries face discrimination and inequality from both the workforce and their communities. This oppresses them individually, but also their communities. Empowering women through gender equality is a key factor to reducing poverty. Women are vital contributors to economic advancements. In addition, healthy, educated girls, with equal access to opportunities grow in to intelligent, strong women who are critical thinkers and problem solvers in their communities. Promoting gender equality and ensuring reproductive rights is intrinsic to the path of viable and sustainable economic growth.
